How to Over Head Triceps Extensions

About the Over Head Triceps Extensions

The overhead triceps extension, or French press as it is commonly referred to, is an effective exercise for those who wish to target the triceps. Whilst this exercise profile discusses the French press being performed using an EZ bar, you can easily substitute it for a set of dumbbells or a low cable pulley by placing the seat close to a cable station.

An interesting point to note is the increased activation seen in the lateral head of the triceps when performing the French press. The lateral head is the outer most head of the triceps, and is particularly active when the arm is extended whilst being above the head, like during the French press.

How to perform

  1. Load an EZ bar with a suitable weight and place on the safety collars
  2. Sit on a seat with back support, holding the bar above your head with the arms extended and a medium overhand grip

  1. Keeping the upper arms perpendicular to the floor, lower the weight by flexing at the elbow to bring the bar behind the bar of your head
  2. Descend until your forearms are just past parallel to the ground
  3. Reverse the movement by extending the arms to bring the bar back to the starting position
  4. Do not lock out the elbows at the top of the exercise
  5. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
