Teres Major

Comments

The teres major is located at the upper outer region of the back, teres major means ‘teres’- rounded, and 'major' - big.

The teres major is responsible for a lot of movements that the latissimus doris executes, such as shoulder adduction and extension.

The teres major will be stimulated effectively by general back exercises that require shoulder adduction and scapular retraction such row and pull-up variations. These exercises can be viewed by following the links in the exercise section to the right.

It should be noted that the teres muscle has been shown to have an abundance of type i fibres. Therefore studies have shown that hypertrophy of these fibre types may be best stimulated by greater time under tension.

Many people will choice not to try to directly target the teres major as such, but instead rely on rowing and pull-up variations that will recruit the muscle during shoulder adduction.
