The rhomboid is located in the upper middle region of the back. Rhomboid (or rhomboideus) means 'rhombus-like' - because of its form that resembles a rhombus like shape.
The rhomboid is recruited during retraction of the scapula. Exercises that cause this action will recruit the rhomboids well, such as with rowing, and pull-up exercises. These exercises can be viewed by following the links in the exercise section to the right.
The rhomboids will be stimulated well from general back exercises.
6-12 reps will likely provide optimal time under tension for most the back muscles, providing adequate
stimulation for sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, and acute response to anabolic hormone concentrations, compared
to that of lower rep ranges.
If however strength is your primary goal then 1-5 reps with rowing exercises for the general back muscles
will likely lead to the best recruitment of the large motor units and type iiB fibres, and neural
adaptations of the nervous system.
