The erector spinae is a group of muscles and tendons which are responsible for many planes and directions of movement of the spine, and neck.

The erector spinae is recruited during extension of the spine with exercises such as back extensions and deadlifts.

The erector spinae will also be recruited with spinal rotation.

The erector spinae is an important muscle group which when strengthened correctly will provide good protection to the lumber region.
