The basal metabolic rate (BMR) is a calculation of the caloric needs of a person based from their sex, weight, height and age. The BMR is an estimation of the energy demands of a person whilst at rest, in-active digestive system, and in a neutral environment, that is to say the energy demands of the vital organs to function. The BMR can be a great tool for the majority of people who wish to find out their caloric needs, although as with the BMI, the calculation dues not take into consideration the body composition of the individual. Those with a higher level of muscle mass compared to the average person should increase their caloric needs due to the increase energy expenditure from the muscle mass. Those who are over weight should decrease their caloric needs calculated from the BMR due to the fat mass which is accounted for within the body weight in the calculation.
The calculation of the BMR differs for each sex. Use the tool below to calculate your estimated BMR.
