Ingredients and nutritional values

Multipower Recovery Bar

Multipower Recovery Bar

The following ingredients for the Recovery Bar were taken from the Multipower web site; Corn Syrup, Milk Protein, Fructose Syrup, Collagen Protein Hydrolysate, Dark Chocolate, Vegetable Fat, Magnesium Carbonate, Cocoa Powder, Calcium Carbonate, ViNitroX (Polyphenols out of Citrus Fruits), Flavouring, Sodium Chloride, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Vitamins B6, B1 and B12, Folic Acid.

The Recovery Bar by Multipower is a protein and carbohydrate bar which is designed as a quick and easy to consume recovery product after exercise.

The benefits of the Recovery Bar are said to be (taken from the Multipower web site):
• “Post training there is an increased need for protein to aid muscle repair” and each bar contains 14g of protein
• “Carbohydrates help replenish glycogen levels in the body” and each bar contains 17g of carbohydrates
• “Vitamins assist many bodily functions and the immune system” and each bar contains Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Vitamins B6, B1 and B12.
• “Conveniently carried when access to food is not practical”

The consumption of carbohydrates and protein post exercise is important for recovery, so a practical solution which contains both these macronutrients has potential to be a great product for trainees and athletes. The Recovery Bar does deliver these promises in a convenient manner, yet as a post exercise nutrition solution we could do better.

The main source of protein appears to be milk protein, yet we would ideally want to see a quickly absorbed protein such as whey. The use of simple carbohydrates is generally okay in post exercise nutrition as we want to replenish glycogen stores as soon as possible.

If you want a quick and easy solution then the Recovery Bar could serve as a post exercise snack, yet I would advise whey protein mixed with Maltodextrin in water if possible. This would prove more cost effective and arguably much better from a nutritional stand point post exercise.

Taste and texture

The chocolate flavoured bar was fine from a flavour standpoint, yet fairly chewy. This is not uncommon for recovery bars, so overall the bar scored well for taste and texture.
