Energy generating gyms

The BBC news channel had a small report last night regarding how gyms could use their gym users to generate power, so we can all be like Gordon Brown and save the world, without even leaving the cross trainer! The concept of turning kinetic energy into electrical energy is nothing new, although the interview with the gym goers who attended a gym which had such a scheme in its infant stages were impressed, and like the idea of helping the planet as they worked out. So, maybe we will be able to not only obtain the muscles of Hulk, but be green like him too!

Humans running and cycling to power the planet may seem like some futuristic slavery nightmare, but the gym in the US which has just started to implement gym equipment which converts the gym power into electricity declares the idea has amazing potential. Inventor of the “Human Dynamo”, Mike Taggett, explains 40 gym machines in use generating 100 watts each will cover the energy demands of a gym with low air condition requirements.

The custom gym equipment and the storage of the energy is clearly in its infant stages, and whether such an idea is cost effective on a mass scale is yet to be proved. But, anything which may reduce unsustainable energy production, and possibly reduce gym membership costs, would be welcomed by many.
